사랑은 관심과 노력

13살 때 삼촌같이 지냈던 가까운 어른이 췌장암으로 죽는 것을 소년은 가까이서 경험하게 된다. 상실감에 휩싸인 소년은 인터넷에서 췌장암에 대해 조사를 하다 한 가지 놀라운 사실을 발견한다. " 췌장암 환자의 85% 이상이 암 말기에 진단되며, 이들 중 생존 확률은 단 2% 밖에 되지 않는다 "

왜이렇게 늦을까 소년은 생각해 이유를 다시 알아봤다. 이유는 이랬다
" 진단방법은 무려 60년이나 된 오래된 방법이며, 검사비용은 800달러의 이른다 "
그렇게 소년은 더 좋은 진단 센서를 만드는 방법을 찾기 시작했다.

3개월에 걸쳐 8000여개의 단백질을 조사해 췌장암,난소암,폐암에 반응하는 단백질인 메소텔린을 찾아내는데 소년은 성공했고 . 뒤이어 소년은 여기에 항체와 탄소나노튜브를 결합해 진단 종이를 만들어내기 시작했다.
발명에 필요한 지식은 위키피디아와 구글, 고등학교 생물 교실의 도구 단 몇가지에 불과했다.
그리고 혼자 만든 샘플을 상용화 하기 위해 대학 연구소로부터 등록 신청을 했다.

그 결과로 이 소년이 개발한 검사지의 가격은 단 3센트에 불과하며. 검사에 걸리는 시간도 5분으로 기존보다 168배 빨랐으며 과거 800달러 짜리 검사보다도 400배 이상 높은 민감도를 보여 15%정도에 불과한 췌장암의 조기발견율을 크게 높일 수 있을것으로 기대된다. 올해 17살인 안드라카는 지난해 고든무어상을 수상했으며 현재 1000만달러 (한화 102억)의 상금이 걸린 퀄컴 재단 트라이코더 X프라이즈를 목표로 삼고 의료진단기 개발에 힘쓰고 있다.

잭은 천재일까요? 저는 천재란 표현보다는 "사랑이 충만한" 혹은 "사랑을 할 줄 아는" 아름다운 청년이라는 표현이 더 맞다고 생각합니다.

Jack Andraka was a 15 year old high schooler when he invented SENSATIONAL detector for Pancreatic Cancer, Ovarian Cancer and Lung Cancer with only 3 cents.

When he was 13 years old, one of his close neighborhood friends (he liked him like his uncle) passed away due to Pancreatic Cancer and he experienced deep feeling of loss and looked up Pancreatic Cancer and realized that almost 85% of Pancreatic Cancer was found in late / last stage. And only 2%
of patients survived.

Jack had been investigating why they were found that late. The reason was that they still had been using the same test method which had been used 60 years ago and moreover it cost $800.- just for the test. This is why Jack started his journey to find a better detector.

Jack had spent 3 months matching up almost more that 8,000 protein structure to find specific structure to react with Pancreatic, Ovarian & Lung Cancer and finally found the right structure called "Mesothelin". Afterwards, he invented a test sheet with it.

All his knowledge source was GOOGLE, WIKIPEDIA AND SOME TEST TOOLS IN SCIENCE CLASSROOM at school. He got help from University Lab to get a patent and realize mass production.

It is only a 3 cent tester and takes about 5 min. to get results with 168 times faster than the old detector. It is also more than 400 times more sensitive in reaction. This amazing invention let people expect the current 15% early diagnosis rate to raise dramatically high.

Is Jack Andraka a genius? That is not enough to describe this warm-heart young guy.  He knows how to LOVE.
