어떻게 해야 불쌍한 사람들을 도와주고, 어떻게 해야 백성들이 당하는 고통을 덜어줄 수 있을까만 생각하다보면 해결의 실마리를 찾을 수 있다는 것을 다산에게서 배울 수 있습니다. “해가 지면 모든 새들은 다 집으로 찾아가는데 들어갈 집이 없고, 해가 뜨면 연못의 고기도 먹을 것을 바라는데 배고픔을 물어보는 사람이 없으며, 주변에서는 제각기 부모 형제 처자가 떠들썩하게 지껄이며 서로 즐기는데 나는 가까이 지낼 사람이 없다. 혹은 혹심한 겨울 추위와 지루한 여름 날씨에 질병으로 신음할 때에는 가족의 시중을 받는 종보다 못하니, 이 세상에서 괴로움이 이보다 더 심한 것이 없다.”(「題兼濟院節目後」) 이런 ‘나’는 누구일까요. 죄인이 되어 낯설고 물선 타향땅에서 귀양살이하는 사람들의 신세를 설명하고 있습니다. 다산이 36세 때에 황해도 곡산(谷山)의 원님으로 부임하여 8~9명의 유배객들이 당하는 어려움을 보고서, 마침 자신이 28세에 문과에 급제하여 한림학사로 발탁되자 어떤 일로 충청도 해미(海美)로 10일간 귀양살이 때의 생각이 떠올라, 유배객도 편히 지내고, 그곳 주민들이 유배객 때문에 당하는 고통까지 해결하여, 유배객과 주민 양쪽이 모두 구제받을 수 있는 ‘겸제원’제도를 새로 창설하면서 그 배경과 효험을 설명하는 글에 나오는 이야기가 너무나 절실하게 느껴집니다. 무거운 죄를 짓고 귀양 사는 사람도 기본권은 보장받아야 마땅하거늘, 항차 바르지 못한 재판으로 억울한 유배살이를 하거나, 모함으로 죄 없이 유배살이 하는 사람의 불편을 덜어주지 않을 수 없다는 생각에서, 유배객도 대접받는 제도를 만들자는 뜻에서 창설한 것이 ‘겸제원’이라고 다산은 설명했습니다. 남의 아픔을 자신의 아픔으로 이해하고, 남의 불편이나 억울함을 자신의 것으로 역지사지(易地思之)할 아량과 포용력을 지녀야만 지도자의 역할을 제대로 할 수 있다는 것을 다산은 가르쳐주고 있습니다. 추위는 다가오는데 노숙자들이나 갑자기 화란을 당해 불행에 처한 사람들, 그들의 아픔에 동참하고 함께하는 그런 지도자들이 많이 나오기를 바라면서 다산의 사려 깊은 행정조치를 기억해 보았습니다. Gravity vs Gravitational Waves

Gravity(중력)에 대한 Isaac Newton(1642~1727)의 생각은 두 물질은 서로 잡아 당기는 성질을 가진다는 것이었다.
이것이 약 180년 후 Albert Einstein(1879~1955)의 특수 상대성 이론을 통해 구체화 된다. 질량을 가진 물질은 우주 공간에서 시간/공간의 굴절을 일으키고 이것이 중력 발생의 근원이 된다는 것이다. 즉, 매트리스 위에 볼링공을 놓으면 그 주변으로 매트리스가 패어 들어가면서 변형이 일어나는데, 그 가까운 주변에 작은 탁구공을 가져다 놓으면 볼링공으로 빨려들어가는 원리가 바로 중력인 것이다.
이것을 거대한 우주 공간으로 확장시킨다면, 엄청난 질량을 가진 물질은 엄청난 변형을 일으키고 그 중심의 중력은 엄청난 에너지를 갖게 된다. 이것이 블랙홀이다. 엄청난 중력의 에너지를 받는 블랙홀 내부에서 흐르는 시간은 블랙홀 외부에서 바라보는 시간과 다른데, 엄청난 중력의 힘으로 빛의 속도에 근접하게 이동하게 되면 그 공간의 시간은 외부공간의 시간보다 느리게 가게 된다. 과학자들의 복잡한 계산 공식으로 시간의 차이가 확인 될 수 있겠으나, 인터스텔라나 마션과 같은 우주공간을 주제로 한 영화에서 우주여행을 하는 사람의 시간과 지구상의 시간의 차이를 보여주는 내용을 보면 쉽게 이해될 수 있겠다. 즉, 이론적으로 미래로의 시간 여행이 가능할 것이라는 것이다. 물론 과거로의 여행은 불가능하지만.

Gravitational Wave(중력파)는 앞서 말한 질량을 가진 물질의 시공간을 왜곡시켜 중력을 일으키는데 이 물질들이 서로 이동을 하면서 발생시키는 중력의 파장을 말한다. 이번에 2015년 9월 14일 미국 LIGO에서 관측된 중력파는 인간이 발견한 최초의 중력파이자 아인슈타인의 이론이 맞았음을 뒷받침하는 발견이어서 세간의 많은 주목을 받게 된 것이다.
그동안은 전자파로만 확인되던 우주의 역사가 중력파를 통해 빅뱅 직후의 현상들에 대해 파악이 가능해 질 것으로 사료되 우주에 대한 인간의 지식이 한단계 진일보 했다는 의미이기도 하다.

중요한 것은 기술적 우위를 무기로 지구상의 지배권을 유지하려는 사고보다는 더불어 인류에 유익한 방향으로 기술이 사용되기를 바라며, 이런 의미있는 일에 대한민국도 한 축을 담당할 수 있게 되기를 소망해 본다.

'0'의 탄생

숫자 0은 언제 발견되었을까요? 
  로마숫자와 다르게 아라비아숫자는 숫자의 위치에 따라 그 크기가 달라져요. 이때 새로운 숫자의 필요성이 인지되었고 수천 년의 시간이 지난 후에 0이 발견되었지요. 
  1800년 전 인도에서 무(無)가 처음 발견되었어요. 아무것도 없는 상태를 표기할 수 있게 된 것이지요. 바빌로니아, 그리스, 마야 그리고 중국 사람들은 다른 수들을 정확한 위치에 표기하기 위해 일종의 구분자 역할을 하는 기호가 필요하다는 것을 이미 알고 있었어요. 하지만 0이 구분자 역할 외에도 더 많은 의미를 가진다는 사실은 인도인들이 가장 먼저 알아냈어요. 인도인들은 0이 실제 수임을 안 것이지요. 
  아리아바타가 쓴 유명한 《아리아바티야》란 책에서 0이나 10진수에 해당하는 숫자가 사용되고 있어요. 물론 아라비아숫자가 현재처럼 된 것은 15세기경이라고 하지요. 태양을 의미하고 있던 0은 ‘●’이던 것이 차츰 ‘○’으로, 다시 ‘0’으로 변했다고 추측되고 있어요. 또 한 바퀴 돌아도 제자리로 돌아오는 모양이라서 ‘0’을 사용했다는 주장도 있지요. 
  0에 대한 연구를 문서로 남긴 최초의 인물은 서른 살의 인도 수학자 브라마굽타였어요. 628년에 쓰인 그의 저서 《우주의 창조》에는, “0은 같은 두 수를 뺄셈하면 얻어지는 수”라고 0에 대한 정의가 내려져 있어요. 브라마굽타는 그 아무것도 남지 않은 상태, 즉, 무(無)의 상태를 영(Zero)이라 부르고 0이 실제 수라고 주장했어요. 이를 증명하기 위해 “어떤 수에 0을 더하거나 빼도 그 수는 변하지 않는다. 하지만 0을 곱하면 어떤 수도 0이 된다.”라며 0이 어떻게 작용하는지를 설명했어요. ‘0(Zero)’라는 이름은 그로부터 1세기 정도가 흐른 뒤 이탈리아에서 붙인 이름이랍니다.
0을 포함해 모두 열 개의 기호를 이용했던 인도의 기수법은 11세기경에 스페인으로 전해졌어요. 그러나 변화를 싫어하는 유럽 사람들은 이 숫자들을 쉽게 받아들이지 못했지요. 그러나 인도의 십진 기수법은 상인이나 무역업자가 매매나 부기 등에 편리하게 이용할 수 있었기 때문에 점차 유럽에 전파되기 시작했어요. 
  기원전 300년경, 바빌로니아 사람들은 빈자리를 나타내는 기호를 사용했답니다. 그들은 계산판 위에 바둑알처럼 생긴 돌을 놓아 가면서 계산을 하고, 마지막에 그 돌들의 위치를 옮겨 적었어요. 그런데 한 가지 문제가 있었어요. 계산판에는 칸이 나누어져 있기 때문에 빈자리가 있었지만, 옮겨 적을 때에는 간격이 들쭉날쭉하여 어디가 빈자리인지 알 수 없었던 것이지요. 그래서 그들은 빈자리를 메우는 기호를 만들었어요. 그들에게 0은 마치 우리가 도서관에서 잠깐 자리를 비울 때 책상 위에 자리 주인이 있다는 표시로 올려놓는 책과 같은 것이었지요. 
  0은 기원전 4세기에 바빌로니아의 알렉산더 대왕이 인도를 침략한 것을 계기로 인도에 전해졌고, 인도 사람들은 단순한 기호에 불과했던 0에 ‘없음’이라는 뜻을 달아 준 것이랍니다. 서양 사람들이 0과 음수를 ‘수’라고 생각한 것은 그로부터 1000년이 지난 17세기 이후였어요. 0은 눈에 보이는 수가 아닌 상상의 수라는 관념 때문이었지요. 하지만 아주 오랜 옛날부터 중국과 인도 사람들은 2-2가 0이므로 2-3은 -1이라는 것을 알았고, '(-2)×(-2), (-2)÷(-3)'과 같은 계산도 할 줄 알았답니다.
